Research Engineer or Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d)
The Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL) conducts research that covers a wide range of topics, including nonlinear optics, quantum optics, nanophotonics, photonic crystal fibres, optomechanics, quantum technologies, biophysics, and links between physics and medicine. We invite applications for a position in a new three-year research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) through the funding scheme “Wissenschaftliche Vorprojekte zu Grundlagenfragen der Quantentechnologien und Photonik.”
We are seeking a
Research Engineer or Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in the field of Engineering Physics or Materials Science (or a related qualification)for research and development into specialty optical fibres
Your tasks
- 3D-printing, extrusion, and chemical purification of structured glass preforms made from fused silica
- Drawing of microstructured optical fibres, in particular novel hollow-core fibres for applications in high-speed commu-nications, quantum technology, sensor technology, etc.
- Publication of the achieved results in scientific journals and at conferences
Your profile
- Experience with working in a cleanroom environment is an advantage, as is experience in fibre optics, handling of pro-cess gases, glass processing, and control engineering
- A completed Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering Physics, Materials Science, Engineering or a similar discipline
- The ability to work independently, a willingness to learn, and a team spirit
- Good English skills
- The ability to climb stairs in a cleanroom is an essential requirement

The position is part of a three-year research project. Remuneration is based on your qualifications and experience, in accordance with the pay scale set out in the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund).
