zunächst befristet für die Dauer von drei Jahren zu besetzen. Die Eingruppierung richtet sich nach den Tätigkeitsmerkmalen des für die Goethe-Universität geltenden Tarifvertrages (TV-G-U).

Das „Center for Critical Computational Studies“ (C³S) ist eine fachbereichsübergreifende wissenschaftliche Einrichtung und als solche ein zentrales Forschungszentrum der Goethe-Universität (www.c3s-frankfurt.de). Aufgabe des C³S ist die Etablierung und Profilierung der „Critical Computational Studies“ als inter- und transdisziplinäres Forschungsfeld mit internationaler Sichtbarkeit. Das C³S betätigt sich diesbezüglich in Studium und Lehre sowie Transfer und schafft die Möglichkeiten, um Wissenschaftler*innen aller Fachbereiche, Fächerkulturen, Wissenschaften und Profilbereiche im Kontext der „Critical Computational Studies“ zusammenzuführen und national wie international zu vernetzen. Das Zentrum verpflichtet sich dabei auf wissenschaftliche Exzellenz, die Leitlinien zur Sicherung guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis sowie die Förderung der frühen Unabhängigkeit von Wissenschaftler*innen in der beruflichen Einstiegsphase.

Das Projekt:

Die Stelle ist Teil der VW-geförderten Forschungsgruppe „Technological Transformations in Migration and Asylum Governance (TETRAMAG)“ (2026-2030), unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Natalie Welfens. Die Forschungsgruppe ist am Center for Critical Computational Studies (C³S) der Goethe-Universität angesiedelt und arbeitet mit dem International Rescue Committee (IRC) Deutschland als Praxispartner zusammen.

TETRAMAG ist ein transdisziplinäres Forschungsprojekt, das technologischen Wandel in der deutschen und europäischen Migrations- und Asylpolitik untersucht. Im Zentrum der Forschung steht die Frage, welche sozialen Ungleichheiten und Ein- und Ausschlussdynamiken durch neue Technologien entstehen und wie technologischer Wandel inklusiv und partizipativ gestaltet werden kann. Das Projekt kombiniert Ansätze der politischen Soziologie, der Science and Technology Studies und der Migrationsforschung und analysiert Digitalisierung in drei Etappen des Migrationsprozesses: (1) Zugangswege, (2) Ankunft, (3) Integration und Teilhabe. Die Methodik ist überwiegend qualitativ und partizipativ (u. a. Participatory Action Research), ist jedoch grundsätzlich auch für andere Forschungsansätze, insbesondere im Bereich Computational Social Sciences, offen.

Ihre Aufgabenschwerpunkte:

Sie bearbeiten das Teilvorhaben „ Technologies for long-term integration and participation“ und analysieren Technologien, die bedarfsgerechte Integrationsangebote für Migrant*innen und Geflüchtete fördern (z. B. durch Matching-Technologien), um gesellschaftliche Teilhabe zu stärken. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt auf der Perspektive migrantischer Communities: Sie untersuchen, ob und wie deren Bedarfe, Erfahrungen und Kompetenzen in die Entwicklung und Nutzung digitaler Tools einfließen und wie Co-Creation- und Co-Development-Ansätze zwischen Migrant*innen, Softwareanbietern und institutionellen Akteur*innen (z.B. Kommunen, NGOs) gestaltet werden können.

Die Forschungsergebnisse sollen sowohl zu aktuellen wissenschaftlichen Debatten beitragen als auch politische und praktische Entscheidungsprozesse mitgestalten.

Ihre Aufgabenschwerpunkte sind insbesondere:

• Vorbereitung, Durchführung und Auswertung von Forschung zu digitalen Technologien im Bereich Integration und gesellschaftliche Teilhabe, mit besonderem Augenmerk auf migrantische Communities
• Konzeption und Moderation von partizipativen Formaten an der Schnittstelle von migrantischen Communities, Softwareentwickler*innen, NGOs und Kommunen
• Erarbeitung von Handlungsempfehlungen und innovativen Konzepten für deren Umsetzung
• Präsentation von Forschungsergebnissen auf internationalen Konferenzen, sowie bei Veranstaltungen für Praktiker*innen und Projekttreffen mit Praxispartner*innen

Ihr Profil:

• ein sehr gut abgeschlossenes wissenschaftliches Hochschulstudium im Bereich Sozialwissenschaften
• Kenntnisse in sozialwissenschaftlichen Methoden, vorzugsweise qualitativen Methoden (z.B. Interviews, Fokusgruppen, Participatory Action Research), sind erforderlich.
• Fähigkeit zum wissenschaftlich korrekten und zugleich allgemeinverständlichen Schreiben
• Sehr gute schriftliche und mündliche Kenntnisse in Englisch sind erforderlich.

Außerdem wünschen wir uns:

• hohe Affinität zu inter- und transdisziplinärer Forschung
• Kenntnisse in einem der folgenden Bereiche: Migrations- und Fluchtforschung, Digitalisierung, Diskriminierung, soziale Ungleichheit und intersektionale Perspektiven auf Migration, Computer Sciences/Software Engineering, idealerweise mit Fokus auf Co-Creation/Co-Development z.B. von Matching-Technologien
• Erste Erfahrungen in der Zusammenarbeit mit migrantischen Communities oder in migrationsbezogener Projektarbeit sind von Vorteil.
• Reisebereitschaft national und international
• Grundkenntnisse der deutschen Sprache oder die Bereitschaft Deutsch zu lernen sind von Vorteil.
• Sprachkenntnisse in weiteren Sprachen oder eigene Zugänge zu migrantischen Communities – etwa durch persönliche Netzwerke, biografische Bezüge oder berufliche Erfahrung – sind von Vorteil.

The project:

The position is part of the research group ‘Technological Transformations in Migration and Asylum Governance (TETRAMAG)’ (2026-2030), led by Prof. Natalie Welfens and funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. The research group is based at the Center for Critical Computational Studies (C³S) at Goethe University Frankfurt and works with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Germany as a practice partner. TETRAMAG is a transdisciplinary research project that examines technological change in German and European migration and asylum policy. The research focuses on the question of what social inequalities and dynamics of inclusion and exclusion are created by new technologies and how technological change can be made inclusive and participatory. The project combines approaches from political sociology, science and technology studies, and migration studies and analyses digitisation in three stages of the migration process: (1) mobility pathways, (2) initial reception, (3) integration and participation. The methodology is predominantly qualitative and participatory (including participatory action research), but is also open to other research approaches, particularly in the field of computational social sciences.

Your main tasks:

You will work on the sub-project ‘Technologies for long-term integration and participation’ and analyse technologies that promote needs-based integration services for migrants and refugees (e.g. through matching technologies) in order to strengthen social participation. There will be a particular focus on the perspective of migrant communities: you will investigate whether and how their needs, experiences and skills are incorporated into the development and use of digital tools and how co-creation and co-development approaches between migrants, software providers and institutional actors (e.g. local authorities, NGOs) can be designed. The research results are intended to contribute to current scientific debates and help shape political and practical decision-making processes.

Your main tasks will be, in particular:

• preparing, conducting and interpreting research on digital technologies in the field of integration and social participation, with a special focus on migrant communities
• designing and moderating participatory formats at the interface between migrant communities, software developers, NGOs and local authorities
• developing recommendations for action and innovative concepts for their implementation
• presenting research results at international conferences, as well as at events for practitioners and project meetings with practice partners

Your profile:

• a very good, completed university degree in social sciences
• knowledge of social science methods, preferably qualitative methods (e.g. interviews, focus groups, participatory action research), is required
• ability to write in a scientifically accurate yet generally understandable manner
• very good written and spoken English skills are required

We also look for:

• a strong affinity for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research
• knowledge in one of the following areas: migration and refugee research, digitalisation, discrimination, social inequality and intersectional perspectives on migration, computer sciences/software engineering, ideally with a focus on co-creation/co-development, e.g. of matching technologies
• initial experience in working with migrant communities or in migration-related project work is an advantage
• willingness to travel nationally and internationally
• basic knowledge of the German language or a willingness to learn German is an advantage
• language skills in other languages or personal access to migrant communities – e.g. through personal networks, biographical references or professional experience – are an advantage
