The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term initially limited to 1 year. An extension to a total of 5 years is planned..The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).This is a full-time position.The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 14 TV-L.

The Chair of Biochemical Engineering (AVT.BioVT) headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jørgen Magnus is part of the closely connected network of the Aachen Chemical Engineering (AVT). We are one of the world's leading chairs in the development of new methods and techniques for innovative biotechnological production processes and cooperate at national and international level with universities and research institutions, as well as with renowned companies. Our research activities span two core areas: industrial and pharmaceutical biotechnology.

We focus on the development, optimization and intensification of biotechnological processes as well as the development of advanced online measurement technologies. By developing efficient, robust and scalable production processes, we aim to advance the science of biochemical engineering.

Within the group of industrial biotechnology, our research contributes to the transition towards a circular bioeconomy and the reduction of CO2 emissions. We develop sustainable bioprocesses and novel approaches for the efficient use of renewable resources, side- and waste streams.

Within the group of pharmaceutical biotechnology, we develop innovative production technologies for biologics in the fields of cell and gene therapy and protein therapeutics.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the scientific direction of the group for Industrial Biotechnology, develop and lead innovative research projects, contribute to national and international collaborations, and supervise doctoral researchers. He or she will further get the opportunity to give lectures to the students in Aachen as part of obtaining the postdoctoral qualification of “habilitation”.

Ihr Profil

• Master´s degree or equivalent
• Completed PhD in the field of (bio)chemical engineering, biotechnology, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline
• Strong expertise in bioprocess engineering with a focus on industrial biotechnology, and a high motivation to further develop your knowledge in this field
• Demonstrated leadership experience, including the scientific supervision, mentoring and professional development of researchers
• Proven experience in acquisition, coordination, and management of externally funded research projects
• Established network within relevant academic and industrial communities, together with the motivation to further strengthen and expand these collaborations
• A strong scientific track record demonstrated through high-quality publications
• Strong organizational and communication skills, combined with the ability to work effectively across disciplines and organizational interfaces
• Excellent written and spoken communication skills in German and English
• Experience in university teaching, particularly in lectures and seminars, is an advantage

Ihre Aufgaben

As Group Head of Industrial Biotechnology, you will assume scientific, strategic and organizational responsibility for the group and contribute to the further development of the Chair of Biochemical Engineering.

• Supervision and mentoring of PhD candidates including their scientific and professional development
• Leadership and coordination of interdisciplinary national and international research projects
• Development of innovative research ideas and establishment of strategic academic and industrial collaborations
• Identification of funding opportunities and initiation, preparation and submission of research proposals
• Representation of the chair, the research group and its projects at scientific conferences, workshops and other professional events
• Coordination of internal processes, workflows and resource planning
• Personnel planning and team development including recruitment, allocation of responsibilities and long-term development of group members
• Collaboration with accounting and laboratory management
• Conducting teaching activities (lectures, seminars)
• Active contribution to the development and implementation of the chair’s scientific and strategic direction
