At Helmholtz Munich, we develop groundbreaking solutions for a healthier society in a rapidly changing world. We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation. Through strong partnerships, we accelerate the transfer of new ideas from the lab to real-life applications, improving lives.

The Institute of Epidemiology (EPI) (https://www.helmholtz-munich.de/en/epi) investigates environmental, genetic, and lifestyle influences on human health through population-based epidemiology. The Research Unit of Molecular Epidemiology (AME) (https://www.helmholtz-munich.de/en/ame) complements this work with molecular approaches focused on cardiometabolic diseases and allergies.

AME is currently seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatics Scientist (f/m/x) to join an interdisciplinary research team contributing to the Genome of Europe (GoE) (https://genomeofeurope.eu/) project. An ambitious academic initiative aimed at creating a comprehensive whole genome reference of European populations. The successful candidate will play a key role in the development, optimization, and application of computational tools for whole genome sequencing (WGS) data analysis, supporting population-scale studies in human genetics, evolutionary biology, and biomedical research.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to engage in large-scale collaborative research, contribute to cutting-edge bioinformatics methods, and co-author in high-impact scientific publications.

Your tasks

  • Develop and maintain reproducible computational workflows for high-throughput WGS processing (alignment, variant calling, annotation) and ensure data quality through rigorous quality control, benchmarking, and documentation
  • Design and execute population-scale analyses (using WGS data) in collaboration with academic researchers and consortium partners, including integration of multi-cohort genomic datasets under data privacy standards
  • Innovate and optimize analytical tools and algorithms to address challenges in large-scale population genomics while staying current with advances in genome technologies and FAIR/open data practices
  • Provide bioinformatics support across ongoing research projects and contribute to training graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in computational genomics
  • Prepare figures, reports, and manuscripts, and present results at internal meetings, academic conferences, and consortium workshops

Your profile

  • MSc (plus PhD preferred) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field
  • Excellent skills in statistical and biostatistical analysis
  • Detailed knowledge of programming languages, especially Python and R
  • Proficiency in machine learning methods applied to genome-scale datasets
  • Ability to independently design, analyze, and document complex computational workflows, with strong attention to detail
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams
  • Motivation to contribute to scientific research and pursue an academic or scientific career path
  • Good command of written and spoken English

If you fulfill all the requirements, you may be eligible for a salary grade of up to E 13. Social benefits are based on the Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees (TVöD). The position has an (initial) fixed term until 31.03.2028 but may be extended under certain circumstances.

Managing Director Mike Frieser:
